Managing the Humidity in your Home
These tips are from an article by Matthew Brady in Good to Be Home magazine.
Experts generally agree humidity should be kept below 60%, with the Environmental Protection Agency saying that 30 to 50 percent humidity inside your home is ideal.
High humidity can harm your home and it's contents. Here are some simple ways to help:
-
Consider purchasing a hygrometer, a commonly used tool that keeps constant tabs on a room's relative humidity
-
Keep dampness out by making sure your windows are properly sealed and that you don't have any leaking pipes anywhere
-
Use your air conditioner, which is designed to remove humidity while providing wonderfully cooled air. Keep it working efficiently by regularly replacing its filters
-
Get a dehumidifier. A whole-house system can be attached to your HVAC system
-
Vent it out. Use your exhaust vent during and after showering. The same holds true for cooking in the kitchen and doing laundry
-
Air it out. After summer fades and cooler less humid autumn air returns, take advantage of the changing seasons by opening your windows to naturally dehumidify your home
